What's needed to connect external serial devices to CueServer?

CueServer can easily control (or be controlled by) various external devices via it's RS-232 serial port. These include architectural control processors, audio playback devices, video servers, window blind controllers, security systems, and much more. The sky's the limit -- virtually any device with a serial port can be connected to CueServer.

When connecting an external serial device to CueServer, there are just a few settings that must be configured properly. These settings are available in the Hardware Setup / Port Settings page.

Baud Rate
You must set CueServer's serial port baud rate to match the baud rate of the external device. CueServer can communicate at rates from 300 bps to 230,400 bps.

Add CR+LF to Output Strings
When strings are sent from CueServer to another device, CueServer can automatically add carriage-return and line-feed bytes to the end of the transmission. Some devices require communications that don't include these bytes, so if necessary turn off this feature.

Local Echo
When serial data is received from the external device, CueServer sends each byte received back to the device (this is called an "echo"). Local Echo is useful if you are using CueServer's serial port from a Terminal program and you want to see what you are typing. But, for many external devices, this option should be turned off because the echoed characters could confuse the external device and cause unexpected behavior.

Incoming Serial Data Handler
CueServer has several built-in handers for the serial data it receives from the external device. These include interpreting incoming data as CueScript commands, or as ASCII mapped macros or even as ETC Unison serial protocol. Depending on the application, one of these settings may be appropriate.
